There will be free tours of the Bush Family Home during the event. The five sites include: • Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight Ranch State Historic Site-Charles Goodnight co-founded the JA Ranch in 1876, the first cattle ranch in the Texas Panhandle. In 1887, he built a Victorian home for his new venture, the Goodnight-Thayer Cattle Company. His wife Mary Ann helped run the ranch and preserve American bison. Today, the restored home features a spacious second-floor porch overlooking descendants of the Goodnights' original bison herd. • Fort Lancaster and Battlefield State Historic Site-Spanning 82 acres in the Pecos River valley, Fort Lancaster and Battlefield State Historic Site?commemorates the vestiges of one of several posts established in the?1850s that played an important role in westward expansion by providing escorts for mail carriers, wagon trains, and settlers on the San Antonio–El Paso Road en route to California. Today, visitors wander through ruins imagining the once-impressive establishment of over 30 permanent buildings—including a blacksmith shop, hospital, sutler’s store, and bakery—and enjoy the sights, sounds, and wildlife of West Texas. • Magoffin Home State Historic Site-Nestled in downtown El Paso, this striking and unique adobe homestead tells the stories of a multicultural family that influenced the development of the Southwest borderlands. Magoffin family members actively participated in American expansion, West Texas settlement, trade on the Santa Fe-Chihuahua Trail, Civil War turmoil, and U.S.-Mexico relations. Explore the home’s authentic art and furnishings reflecting the daily lives of this prominent El Paso family. • Slaton Harvey House-The newest named state historic site is the 1912 Slaton Harvey House, an historic one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast, event center, and railroad museum. The structure, one of only six Fred Harvey Eating House locations remaining in Texas, has been lovingly restored as a living history museum, with five beautifully appointed rooms for travelers and a spacious Events Center for special occasions. • Bush Family Home State Historic Site-This home has been restored to the early 1950s and reflects the lives of the young Bush Family through exhibits and furnishings.
