The Bush Family Home State Historic Site will host its 1950s summer movie series again after last year’s success. This year’s theme is sci-fi movies. Four sci-fi movies from the 1950s will be shown in the backyard of the home.All guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and snacks. Each event will be from 7:30-10:00 pm. During the series, the dates, topics and speakers will be: June 9 – War of the Worlds (1953) June 23 – Them (1954) July 7 – Forbidden Planet (1956) July 21 – Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) Children activities will begin at 7:30, which will include fun crafts and games related to the scheduled movie. This will make this series fun fro the whole family. Movie going was a major social event, with many people attending theaters regularly. Because tv ownership went up in the 1950s, theaters added to the experience with the introduction of cinerama, 3D, and other widescreen technologies. Even George W. Bush would ride his bike downtown Midland to see cowboy serials and science fiction movies. “Because last year’s inaugural series was a success, we couldn’t wait for the sci-fi series this year,” said Site Educator Chase Kirby. The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is located at 1412 West Ohio St. in Midland. The hours for the home are: Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; the last tour begins at 4:15 p.m. The Bush Family Home joined the Texas Historical Commission in 2023 and is one of 42 sites in the state of Texas.
