Midland Young Leaders Challenge Moving Forward with Essay Contest June event cancelled, but scholarships still available
April 15, 2020 —The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute’s Midland Young Leaders Challenge (MYLC) has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the event, originally scheduled for June 17-18, has been postponed, rising seniors will still have the opportunity to compete for scholarships via an essay writing contest. The first-place winner will be awarded a $1,000 college scholarship, and the second-place winner will earn a $500 scholarship.
All current high school juniors (class of 2021) from Midland County are eligible. This includes students from Midland ISD, Greenwood ISD, and private schools, as well as home school students. Applicants must submit their essays to admin@tommyfranksmuseum.org no later than May 15. Winners will be announced in June.
The topic for the essay is “Leadership in Today’s World.” Those wishing to apply may visit midlandyoungleaders.com for details on the topic, as well as additional submission guidelines. Essays should be no longer than 2,250 words (not counting footnotes). Essays must be original, not having been previously published or being considered for publication. Entry into the contest is free.
In addition, current high school juniors who met the deadline to apply for the original program will have their applications carried over to the 2021 MYLC, where they will still be eligible to participate even if they have already completed high school. Those applicants will be contacted individually.
The dates for the 2021 Challenge have been set for June 16 and 17.
